Questions for Lord's Prayer Series: "Lord Teach Me to Pray"

9/26/2013

Below are the questions for week 4 - "Our Father In Heaven".

Read Matthew 6:9.

  1. How do you understand heaven?  What things do you know about heaven and what questions remain?  How do you answer the question; “Where is heaven?”
  2. Most thought about heaven is directed to its importance as a destination for believers.  Why does Jesus insert the idea of heaven into the Lord’s Prayer?
  3. What does it mean to you that God is “right now” in heaven?  How does it affect the way we are to pray?

Read Psalm 11

  1. In verses 1–3 David protests the advice he has received to run away from the dangers he is facing.  Christians are often accused of not addressing the troubles of this world.  Do you see echoes of this question in verse 3? How would you respond?
  2. How does David answer in verses 4-7?  He starts by recognizing God’s sovereignty and rule “from” heaven.  How does the fact that in some sense God resides apart from this world encourage David?
  3. Does the Psalm suggest David will engage the dangers he is facing (see vs.1), or will he run away from it all?  How would you answer the accusation that Christians do not care about “the foundations being destroyed” (vs.3)?
  4. How does the theological truth of God being apart from the mess of this world, shape David’s hope?  Do see the belief in heaven as a dodge or an encouragement to facing the world?  Why?
